CDB Software Introduces New Value-Based Pricing for its

Intelligent Data Management (IDM) Solutions for IBM DB2 z/OS

New Pricing Methodology Delivers Predictability and Growth Protection by Basing Product Pricing

on the Data CDB Solutions Manage, Not on Processor Size

HOUSTON, July 10, 2007 - CDB Software, Inc., an innovative provider of solutions for DB2 z/OS data management, today announced a new value-based pricing methodology that assures growth protection and pricing predictability by basing product value on the actual data managed by CDB’s Intelligent Data Management (IDM) solutions.  Unlike traditional pricing models which are based on a customer’s installed capacity or some variation such as peak processing, the new CDB Value-Based Pricing enables companies to pay only for the used DB2 DASD that is managed by CDB products.

"Mainframe product pricing has traditionally been based on a measure of system capacity or MIPS," said Carl Olofson, research vice president, IDC. "But due to the increasingly complex nature of software deployments on System z, and the jumbled and varied workloads on those systems, such pricing for data management solutions in DB2 z/OS environments causes customers to pay on a scale that has no relation to size or complexity of that database. Basically, the management of a smaller database that represents only a fraction of a system's workload costs the same amount as the management of a large and complex database.   As system capacities are upgraded to support increasing workloads that may have nothing to do with the database, the database management cost rises anyway because it's tied to system capacity.  In such cases, customers pay more money for no added value.  Customers should consider evaluating new pricing trends that focus on the direct value their DB2 z/OS tools deliver to help increase the cost predictability and growth protection of their applications."

The CDB Value Based Pricing model uses a utility called the DB2 Space Reporter to measure the actual amount of data in a customer’s DB2 object or set of objects, rather than the allocation size.  This program gives customers the flexibility to base product price only on the space actually used by DB2. CDB Value Based Pricing provides the granularity to enable customers to base price on DB2 data usage in an entire enterprise, in a processor complex, in an LPAR, in a DB2 subsystem, in a database, or even in a set of tables.

“With the CDB Value Based Pricing model, our customers find that the value of our products is directly related to the amount of data we help them manage,” said John Barry, vice president, pre-sales and marketing, CDB Software. “By basing product pricing on storage usage and not CPU or even storage capacity, companies have increased budget visibility and predictability because pricing has a direct relationship to their applications and their business.”
