Existing Data Management Processes

Existing data management techniques are no longer acceptable.  Standard data management requires manual, labor intensive processes to set up jobs.  Highly trained DBAs, whose day should be spent improving application performance and query response times for real business benefit, are saddled with the responsibility of housekeeping.

A simple process like a tablespace Reorg may require a RUNSTATS, JCL generation and object analysis, load balancing, backup copies, application preparation for outages, dropping of indexes for performance, rebuilding indexes after completion, splitting the job for maximum performance and finally monitoring the actual Reorg run to handle errors and outages due to those errors.  This process simply will not scale as databases grow to terabytes in size, objects explode into the tens of thousands, batch windows continue to shrink or cease to exist, and personnel are in short supply.

I.T. departments have sought to curb the problems by third party products like JCL Generators or Database Analyzers.  These products, while a help in some respects, do not meet the demanding needs of growing businesses.  These products require several steps on their own and they still do not free the DBA from the time-consuming task of database management.

Though troubling, it is not uncommon to hear the story of the team of DBAs who spend several days a week running vendor products to “AUTOMATE” their data management processes.  It is not uncommon for a DBA team to spend over 50% of their work week running processes of these JCL generators and database analyzers to “free” their time for more pressing work.  In reality, all they have done is shifted focus from the actual utility process to the database analyzer process.  They have not freed up any time.

The growing demands on I.T. departments require that they incorporate new data management processes.  Simply wrapping a shell around existing processes will no longer satisfy today’s business needs.

Growing DB2 demands call for CDB’s Intelligent Data Management Solutions.
